Where you’d rather be (or where you’re not)

I recently spoke to someone in my family who felt that they were stuck in a situation and needed to be doing other things with their life. Before I say anything let me just say that I don’t think I have accomplished much in my life myself, I’ve merely managed to get out on my own in a different city and become self-sufficient. I can’t tell anyone how to become successful or give someone’s life a complete makeover but I can say that we often overlook what simply rests under our noses. I believe that every great person out there who has made a difference stood in the same position of wanting to be somewhere else than where they stood at that moment. Stepping forward into a cloud of mystery or having to step backwards are both steps in any direction. The worst thing you can do is stand still.

So if you’re in a situation you dislike, whether you’re a designer looking to succeed or a kid fresh out of high school, know that one day you might take 5 steps backwards and 1 step forward, but tomorrow you’ll know how to prevent those 5 steps backwards from happening. Life is all about trial and error and I know I’ve made plenty of errors (many call this “paying dues”). In fact, I would say most of my progression all came from creating things I didn’t like. I didn’t like my websites didn’t look like this guy’s site, or my graphics didn’t look how I wanted. Turn that negativity into something positive, use it to drive yourself forward and you’ll find yourself becoming better day by day.

Anyways, more to come this year – lots of new beginnings and changes already happening in 2012. I wish everyone the best this year and hopefully everyone had a great holiday!
